KDE 3.5 Themes by thomas12777 1258 comments

1) you of course have to activate the baghira style first ;-)

2) the panel: you can define any image (e.g. png) as background for kicker:
the window frame: look for an appropriate windeco. baghira windeco currently does _not_ support brushed metal (well... this doesn't have to keep like this, right? ;)

Brushed metal styles are a problem due to the light gradient apple uses.
without the lightning effect - it looks -sorry- crap.
This problem will hopefully vanish with a new layer oriented xserver (w/ hardware support - hopefully)

Sorry for the delay everyone - had an outtime ;-)

Because of the rpm: i cannot help you with this. be sure to have the correct version for your distribution and contact the binary maintainer for support on this.

Because of the compile error:
You simply need the x-free development package installed (this isn't done automatically with most of the consumer distris) or just get the latest xfree binaries from xfree.org
btw: you'll also need the development packages for qt and kde. - Apr 21 2004
MountISO

Dolphin Service Menus by prjanique 283 comments

i wrote a comment on this to
ginger@kypexin.ru
(containing a sample script that mounts .dmgs this way, i think)
and got a reply.
basically the idea is to add an entry to fstab that mounts a open available symlink (e.g. /tmp/virtualcd) as loop device and dynamically link the real iso image to this position right before mounting (and remove the link after umount)
if you want more virtual devices, you need more entries in fstab (and let the script check, if they're currently in use)
the upper restriction is the amount of available loop devices - Mar 31 2004
MountISO

Dolphin Service Menus by prjanique 283 comments

the ability of mounting is not dependend on the owner of the mount binary.
mount has to do entries in system file (mainly mtab) and acquire the device - to prevent opening the system, mount checks to be called root by root if it cannot use a fstab entry. (actually mount has the suid bit set)

However ;-) this actually _can_ be done without root permissions or sudo... (you only need to be root for the installation process, and you're pre resticted to an unlimited (or only limited by the amount of loop devices) number of iso mounts at once) - Mar 31 2004
K3b

Utilities by trueg 224 comments

I had the same problem.
Try to acces the ftp server directly (ftp://ftp.sf.net/k/k3/k3b)

Stupid question:
I'm currently on a M$ machine, using that funny thing that pretends to be a browser (but seems more to be something like a crashmachine - i'm using it because the university has T3 :)
and sf.net tries to access osdn.sf....
instead of any mirror i tried.
Is there a way to block certain OS or even Browsers (from sf - i'd know how to implement this for my own page)? (ie... Access... DENIED! *ggg*) - Mar 29 2004

The Way that KDM should look

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by boskicinek 112 comments

i do understand that so many people would like to see this BUT:
do nort forget, that kdm is mainly a login manager - not an eye candy tool.
allowing skins etc. opens A LOT OF etries to the system (e.g. a skin producer could use a malformed bitmap to force buffer overflows a.s.o.) so the code should better not be to complex to avoid bugs!
Therefore i rather think there should be rather 2 login managers (probably sharing a lot of code)
- one to provide access to systems that need security.
- another one for the "home user" with nice pictures and animations.

just my 2¢ - Mar 21 2004

KXDocker with REAL Transparency

KXDocker by stefano 148 comments

1. I think Stefano also did osX Bar - so he'll probably know, why switching to cpp
2. Karamba as a scripting language gives you some (a lot of restrictions) you just don't have, writing a native app
3. main beloved feature (so far): dynamic window resize (where you get the partially pseudo translucency from) (kleardock couldn't do this + uses the wallpaper instead of a screenshot + plus the icons are not repositioned on rescale)
4. cpp is much more used than karamba - so more coders can (will) review the code and make additions
5. for more info about the difference: check the code ;-)
6. why i think, he's a troll: "where's the difference" is just a provoking and very diffuse question. without a concrete question, no answer will generate more information (cannot - the difference is the whole code)
and this is just trolling.
7. you don't need superkaramba to use this ;-)
OK, i think this is enough off topic now. Please don't let this get: kxdocker vs. kleardock flame.

You're probably missing the development packages. (you need the headers - that are included and "define" the librarys content)
So also install the development packages. usually the have an *-dev extension (but probably this will lead to a complete kde update?, as development packages are usually very stuck to the proper library version) - Jan 27 2004

Allthough i do not like religious ideas at all, i have to concede, that you artistical abilities are really improving.
But... (that had to follow):
1. If you want to use text, you should really switch to png format, as jpeg draws ugly artefacts in this case. (gif will produce either very ugly blurrs ore really big files)
2. I can't help: I do not like the used font! The extensions to e.g. the n and the h are nice, but there are too many circles (imho)
3. Independent from Context: i do not think text (besides e.g. a title) on a wp is a good idea at all (as - if overlayed by icons,e.g. - it's a bit disturbing) - Jan 15 2004

... about this is the gradient on the widget background.
It looks really nice, but will force you to create a window size (well, actually height) pixmap for the polishment + (and this is the biggest problem) capturing vertical size changes and in this case recreate the gradient and redraw allmost all widgets. (and - as qt doesn't like to create alpa pics - you will have to crop a valid background image for all non rect widgets on a vertical resize).
Try to find something nice with a tilable background pixmap. Everything else will lead to painfull slowdowns (as iTunes style would)... or wait for keith's xserver and have the ability to use eg. lightmaps.
Sorry - it's an awefull style anyway. - Jan 09 2004
