quick fix:
try passing the style at startup
vlc -style bespin

many qt only apps provide extra functionality to select the UI style (and store this inside the application)

i don't use vlc myself, but you certainly can ask them how to change its settings

(quick gg says they used to even hardcode the selected style some time ago... 2006 ;-) - Mar 01 2009

yupp, this is the corner widget and as i don't see it this way i assume it's appereance is triggered by something in the statusbar (some plugin? i neither have the rss nor the other icons)

(how to activate them?)

the triangular thing is btw from the deco and as you use a bordersize > 0, you do not really need to activate it, as you can resize the window by dragging the corners - Mar 01 2009

the cornerwidget is normal and custom to applications. (they can e.g. place own widget with special menaings and painting routines there)
does it happen everywhere or is just weired on some apps. (like e.g. opera...)

ad 1: i'm working on a "font extent fix", so 1st. the weired extent info some fonts provide is removed and 2nd you can provide a value you wish as extent. this just will take a little more time.

ad 2: not atm - sorry. the reason is that comboboxes are simply no buttons and usually you want them buttonlike/raised because
- that's the way they're on windows/mac os/ etc
- well, to get a better aqua clone

both reasons are tagged invalid >-)

however in some future - when you really lost the idea of "combos must look like buttons" and can take a free choice, you'll get options for "traditional" combobox and progressbar looks - don't ak me when this will be, though ;-P - Feb 27 2009

err.. just to ensure: bespin is in core a /style/

now on XBar:
- edit ~/.config/Bespin/XBar.conf

--- snip ---
[XBar]
ShowTaskbar=false
-- end snip ---

- not sure on your font, but:
though there's some padding around the text and the text /is/ vertically centered, the XBar plasmoid is aligned to the panels top. the idea is to get as much free space as possible for the popups while allowing bigger panels (e.g. cause the systray now atm requires it)

- since a few revs. the visual font size of the first item should match the rest.
(the problem here is that i want it to be bold, but embolding a font can change it's geometry)
this however relies on the fonts metric info. if this is broken, there isn't much i could do (but not bolden)

yeah, i hope i fixed it in that rev. so i wanted you to check and see whether the situation has improved for you :-)

with bespin you can use the XBar plasmoid to have mac-a-like menus outside the window and we started designing a general Gnome/KDE x-compatible thing here

and of course it /is/ an issue, at least to you. otherwise you woudn't have mentioned it in the first place:

what i really meant was:

RELAX!

i just don't like this extra-careful "i don't want to ... with this really minor thing ... 'cause i'm worth nothing" nonsense too much

this item (menu alignment) is important to you, so please name it and just name it directly (w/o any "it's not important, but" statements).

you also don't have to "apologize" for misunderstanding the oxygen/bespin relation - that happens to many ppl. (what means the error is likely on our side) and it's no big deal at all

(to me) you (and others...) just appear a little bit afraid you could possibly offend/annoy/anger me or whatever if you don't take care of your words - you don't (certainly not this way), so KEEP COOL and away from bowing around

=D - Feb 10 2009

FYI: the oxygen style and bespin have almost no common codebase (the resetteld in on plastik and just more or less kept the tilesetting class)

last point (this holds to anyone reading this)
there's absolutely no reason to kind of excuse yourself or diminish your objections. ("little")
if you feel you need to point out sth. (at least to me), just go ahead - you'll not in- or decrease your odds to get what you want by /any/ kind of behaviour =P - Feb 09 2009

afaics they seem to implement (and force?) a quite specific usecase (while the contextview could be used in many cases and thus the fixed position isn't necessarily a good choice)

beyond this: tagging alpha versions .0 is a bad KDE tradition and i can assure there's currently some effort on especially the playlist (that i think is really gonna beat the old one once it's finished)

in the end this kind of "hard migration" is naturally gonna take some time - they can probably always need more manpower (on the right topics...) and on some softpower (i.e. /not/ general "amarok2 sucks" comments) we maybe can improve the UI as well =D - Jan 22 2009

Be-Shell/Bespin by thomas12777 1662 comments

hmm, if restarting (krusader, i assume) fixes the issue, it's likely a behavior triggered bug (i.e. ctrl+s initially works, you do sth., then ctrl+s fails)
if you can trace down (a bit) which behavior in particular triggers this, i can possibly detect the problem based on this.

about embedding other menus:
KDE3 - yes, but unless extending e.g. a qt3 style to use the xbar dbus protocol it will only work with KDE3 (not plaint qt3 apps) and probably look out of place (as the apps menubar is completely embedded into the panel)
i don't use any kde3 app anymore however and that's what will likely happen to everyone...

Gtk would be far more interesting.
afaik there's only some unsupported patch to get external menus with gtk
and i don't know how it works, but i'll inspect it. (best would be to find a common protocol between gtk and qt - other toolkits may then jump the bandwaggon ;-) - Jan 22 2009

Be-Shell/Bespin by thomas12777 1662 comments

if it fails with bespin exclusively it's a bespin problem, i just cannot reproduce this

ensure you use the latest bespin rev. and deactivate /all/ hacks. then ensure to really restart krusader and check if the shortcut failure is conditional (i.e. which window/section has the focus etc...) - Jan 21 2009
Bespin

Be-Shell/Bespin by thomas12777 1662 comments

the problem with a patch is:
it has to be maintained :-(

now - with the "runtime patching" - i don't have to change a lot, but a source patch has to be adjusted with every even minor change of amarok (in that area, afaik e.g. the contextview is subject to change... in a way)

http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/859-Context-View,-Reborn-pt.-1.html

unfortunately chances to get such patch into amarok are low - otherwise i'd change a hell more of the UI when patching anyway (e.g. use dockwidgets instead of the fixed 3col appereance etc.)

and no, sorry: this kind of suggestion (UI changes) has been rejected several times by the amarok team for i don't know what reason
:-(

the only real option was to somehow fork amarok, but you need a complete team to do so, best backed by some distributions - Jan 21 2009

the hacks have a modular design.
the trick is to get them into amarok. you'll either
- have to write some amarok plugin that has access to all widgets (if amarok allows binary plugins this should be possible)
- ask the style dev of your choice to use the (at least amarok) hacks,
- write a proxy style that polishes amarok with the hacks and loads some real style or
- ask the amarok devs to add them... well, i guess i wouldn't have written the hacks if there was some chance... :-( - Jan 18 2009

ok,
a) usr/share/kde4/apps is probably wrong. you likely want a leading slash (-> /usr/...) - if this wasn't just a typo

b) a "make uninstall" failure means that you didn't successfully run cmake

i assume you're mixing up qmake and cmake

the cmake environment as generated by the config script resides in the "build" subdir whereas qmake likes living in the top src dir.

i.e. ensure you're building and installing from the build dir.

if you still have trouble (like messed up the build environment too much), just "rm -rfd" build (delete the build directory) run configure again, enter the build directory and re-make, make install

if you're still not successful, call again ;-) - Jan 10 2009

i suspect ubuntu no more ships kde4-config?

anyway:

enter the buid directory and

first:"make uninstall" to get rid of files in wrong locations, then:

call "ccmake .."

adjust the install INSTALL_PREFIX to whereever your kde4 installation resides ("kde4-config --prefix", but then configure would have taken this path anyway) also check KDE_DATA_DIR (kde4-config --path data)

oh, and please infor me where the vars pointed, whether kde4-config was installed and what it puts out. (maybe i can workaround this if it's a real problem on ubuntu)
