Yes, ksysguard is what I use in Trinity(KDE3). But I can't see how to put ksysguard in a panel in KDE5 :-( That inability is what led me to look for a different widget, which is when I found yours.
- Dec 05 2019
How do I use this to view, in a panel, real-time CPU and bandwidth resources on a remote computer ?

I normally use the Trinity desktop (i.e., more or less, KDE3) and am looking to move to the current version of KDE, but I need to be able
to run several widgets monitoring resources on remote systems. In KDE3/Trinity this is easy using the "System Guard" widget, but I don't see how to do it in KDE/plasma 5. This seems like the right widget, but maybe I'm wrong and there's another one that I need to install to do the job?

That ksystraycmd command doesn't seem to work if one puts it into the K menu.

For example, I have sunbird in /home/n7dr/programs/sunbird, but if I put the command:

"ksystraycmd --startonshow --keeprunning home/n7dr/programs/sunbird/sunbird" as a menu item on the K menu, the command doesn't run (although it does run if I type it from a console window).

I've tried putting an explicit path in for the working directory, and also trying various combinations of the other checkboxes when creating the K menu item, but none of them seem to work with the ksystraycmd you describe. I don't know why.

Really, KDE should have a "minimize to tray" option on all main application windows. It seems, according to some threads I've seen, that this is being considered for the future. - Oct 21 2006

Thank you so much for your great help in getting this installed and running on my Kubuntu system.

Now that it's running, there seems to be one problem.

When I click the "Playlist" link, the page that is shown is more or less empty. Certainly it does not show the playlist.

(If I try to include the source code for the page in this message, unfortunately the forum software mangles it.)

If I hit the "Currently Playing" link on that page, then nothing happens at all.

The only links visible are the "Back" link (twice) and the "Currently Playing" link (which does nothing). - Oct 16 2006
Does anyone know which Kubuntu package contains DCOP/Amarok/Player.pm???

Running Kubuntu 6.06-1 I am getting this error when I try to run this script:

OK - I have now convinced myself that it's not the theme's fault.

The version of SK that is shipped with 64-bit Mandriva 2006.0 is simply unstable. It crashes seemingly at random, sometimes after several days, more usually after a few hours. And it has a quite high probability of simply crashing on start-up.

I don't know whether this is just because it's the 64-bit version or what, but SK as shipped with that version of the OS is pretty frustrating. In fact, 64-bit apps in general seem to be rather too "bleeding edge" for comfort :-( Many of them are unstable. - Jun 07 2006
I have amassed quite a bit of circumstantial evidence that this theme causes SK to crash sporadically -- or at least is associated with SK crashes.

Normally I run with ~12 themes in place, so it's been quite a pain to try to figure out which one is causing SK to crash, especially since it doesn't happen very often.

So I've been running various combinations of themes to see how stable they are, and so far the only theme that all the combinations that crashed have in common is this one; and I haven't seen a crash yet when this theme is not running.

So while I'm not saying that it's definitely causing a crash, I am getting fairly suspicious of it. I wonder if anyone else has experienced SK crashes while running this theme?

(I fully admit that it's pretty weird that ANY theme could cause SK to crash -- one would think that the worst that could happen is that the theme crash.) - May 29 2006

Thanks very much for reporting this. I'll look at it as soon as I get time (maybe I won't have chance for more than a week, though -- I am very busy with work at the moment) - May 31 2006
I uploaded version 1.2 yesterday, and shortly afterwards discovered something interesting and rather odd: on my system, the KDE-look RSS feed triggers the bozo detection -- even though in fact there seems to be nothing wrng with the XML in the feed.

As far as I can tell, it's because *.rdf files are treated as text/plain, which is somehow regarded by the feedparser module as an inappropriate type for RSS feeds.

Anyway, I think I have a fix in place, but I want to leave it running here for a couple of days to make sure that it is stable. With any luck, I'll be able to upload a version 1.3 containing the fix sometimes tomorrow. - May 29 2006
How did you get that traceback? There must be a trick I don't know about that lets you see tracebacks when themes fail. - May 27 2006
OK...

the items in that feed have no description field (and, more importantly, it no pubDate field).

This failure is actually not in code I wrote (don't you hate it when you rely on someone else's code and it breaks? :-) ).

I'll see if I can figure out a way for it fail cleanly -- although the theme still won't actually display anything from this feed, since it has no pubDates, so the theme doesn't knwow how to put the items into time order. But obviously silent failure would be better than the error you're currently getting. - May 21 2006
Someone must have voted this down below 50% -- which is fine, but I'd really like to know why. Didn't the theme do what it said it was going to do? Was there some problem with it?

The only reason I'm asking is because I find this theme extremely useful, and I'm a bit surprised that someone else wanted the functionality enough to download it, but then they were presumably disappointed in what they actally got. So I'd like to at least hear why they didn't like it, in case it's something I can easily fix (or they can fix it themselves if they prefer). - May 20 2006

Nice job.

You might also want to check out the multistat widget that I just uploaded. (Like you, I thought to myself, "why just stop with the VPN toggle when there's all kinds of things that can be monitored and toggled?" :-) - May 30 2006

There shouldn't be a port problem; the SSL version of the POP3 object will connect to the correct port (I checked that before I suggested that you try the POP3_SSL version; the default port that the object expects to use matches the port that google uses). So the problem may be what I suggested (i.e., the e-mails are never removed from the server) or it may be something else, but I'm pretty sure that it's nothing to do with the ports. - May 27 2006
I don't think it's that easy.

The reason is that you normally don't download the e-mail from the gmail.com server, so I suspect that every time the theme tried to download the headers, it would get them ALL.

You can test it if you like:

1. Add the line
from poplib import POP3_SSL
near the top of popcheck.py

2. Replace all occurrences of POP3 in the code with POP3_SSL

In theory, that's all that's needed. But as I say, I think you'll find that while that would work for ordinary POP3 servers accessed over SSL, it won't do what you want for gmail.

So I suspect that for google, one would ned to implement some state that keeps track of how many e-mails have been looked at in the past. Which is a bit more pain than I want to subject myself to right now :-)

Although if someone else reads this and wants to implement it, they're of course welcome to give it a shot.

Incidentally, if I'm wrong and the changes I describe above are in fact all that's needed to make th etheme work with gmail, just let me know and I'll put them in the base code. - May 21 2006

FYI:

It says I need PerlQt (to access the graphical configuration stuff) -- but PerlQt is installed (via urpmi from my distro). So I wonder if there's a problem with the part of module-test.pl that detects PerlQt. - Apr 17 2006
That should be: "as root or as an ordinary user"?

I tried as an ordinary user, and when it had all finished, I tried "install DCOP", and got the following:

$ install DCOP
install: too few arguments
Try `install --help' for more information.

So presumably I need to run this stuff as root -- but I don't want to run as root unless you tell me I have to.

I added the Time and Config modules from my distro, but the distro doesn't contain DCOP (mandatory) or some of the necessary optional modules. - Apr 17 2006
OK; there's a ton of modules I need to add. Should I execute "perl -MCPAN -e shell" or as an ordinary user? - Apr 17 2006

I thought that this was going to be exactly what I wanted. But it doesn't work at all here :-(

I created a mailbox-streamer.cfg file, and checked that it was actually being used by changing some innocuous things (like the background image) and reloading the theme to make sure that indeed my changes were reflected in what I see on screen.

So I know that the config file is being read OK.

But I NEVER see any mail, even though I know that there are several e-mails waiting on the POP3 server. - Apr 15 2006
