This happens when the script returns a value unequal to zero. It will do this when it fails. Could you please open a konsole window in the directory where the install files are located and run:

./DVDBuilder.sh ; echo $?

You can post the output, or email it to me. The last line of the output should only contain '0'. - Aug 14 2005

Could you please run DVDBuilder.sh from the command line and send me the output?

It checks if all required software is installed. When this is not the case, it will tell you by showing a dialog and commit suicide.

You do have kdialog installed?? If not, it won't show you anything except Could Not Run DVDBuilder.sh. - Aug 11 2005

I never tried running Kommander dialogs outside KDE. But I have no idea how that could NOT work.

Thanks a lot for your feedback! Always happy to hear that things are working as they should.

Most of the improvements you suggested are on my to-do list, for as far as they don't complicate things too much. DVD Rip-O-Matic should stay as simple as possible, while still flexible enough to get the most common ripping jobs done. - Mar 22 2005

I have not made the jump to KDE 3.4 yet, so I cannot test or reproduce anything.

Also, the KDE DVD Authoring Wizard has not been publicly released yet (although it is downloadable from my site) because there are some cases of 'ugly programming' that could lead to lots of people running into trouble. As soon as things get solid, I will announce it here on kde-apps.org and try it on KDE 3.4 myself. - Mar 22 2005

Album Shaper

Graphic Apps by wstokes 37 comments

I wish DigiKam was more like this application. The usability of Album Shaper is top notch. Especially the 'Edit' part is brilliant. So simple.

One bug: When I want to choose a directory to save the album to, it won't let me select a directory. Maybe you mixed up a directory chooser with the 'save-as' dialog.

Suggestion: It took me quite a while to discover how to set an image for the album. It might be better if you always display the album image and allow the user to change it by clicking on it. The default album picture could be an empty picture with the words 'Click to change' on it.

One more suggestion: Add "what's this" balloons to each GUI element that pop up on mouse hovering, explaining how to use each GUI element.

Idea: How about an image printing application that works quite like Album Shaper (Maybe you can re-use code), but creates photo collage PDF files for printing? That's really something I'm still dreaming about. - Mar 14 2005

I try to target my software at unexperienced users who are unable to setup an application like this. More experienced users can do perfectly without a GUI, as has been illustrated by the desktop-link solution.

Experienced users who still want to have a GUI are invited to start developing Kommander applications themselves. For anyone who can write simple Bash scripts, Kommander is really easy to learn. - Mar 07 2005

Are you all using Suse Linux by any chance?

You can check if your mplayer is capable of XviD encoding by typing

mencoder -ovc help 2>&1 | grep xvid

in a Konsole. If this command does not print anything, your mplayer version is missing XviD and you should seach for a version that includes XviD support, or compile it from source. If the command prints this:

xvid - XviD encoding

then your mplayer should work perfectly. - Mar 07 2005
Metabar

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by FJR 249 comments

Sometimes the scrollbar does not appear so you can't reach the bottom part of the sidebar.

It would be great if the metabar could be completely customisable, in the sense that the user can add any command (with the folder of filename as argument) as an action to the metabar. For every action, the user should be able to specify what objects should have that action. For example, you could add a command that shows a slideshow of a directory with images. This action would only be available if the user is browsing in a 'folder with images in it' object. - Mar 07 2005

I can't think of anything else except that you linked the wrong /dev/ entry to /dev/dvd. Please try playing a DVD using the -dvd-device option of mplayer like this:

mplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device "/dev/your-dvd-device"

This will only work correctly when you provide the path to the correct DVD device. Use this to find out which device your DVD device is. - Mar 04 2005

kio-locate

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by arminstraub 178 comments

I see that new users have trouble finding files with your locate kioslave, because they don't remember the case of the filename. They need to try searching for both "mynewpicture" and "MyNewPicture" to find what they are looking for.

Maybe it makes more sense to search case insensitive by default. Maybe you could use case sensitive search only when the search keywords contain mixed upper/lower case characters. - Dec 09 2004

Of course you can still select any URL as the default URL for file browsing, just as you can do that now.

But IMHO it may be better to choose the locations:/ URL as default, because it has better usability for new users. Power users can always revert to the usual file:/home/username. - Nov 13 2004
