You should not run the shell script from the commandline. You should run the Kommander script using the Kommander Executor. See the included README file. - Jan 08 2006

Thanks for your feedback! My email address can be found by clicking on my name at the top of this page.

Special characters should work perfectly as long as you select fonts that support them. If this is not the problem, you can try if ImageMagick can render special characters in the first place. The wizard uses ImageMagick to render the characters.

Kommander has some limitations, controlling the Next/Previous buttons is one of them.

About NTFS filesystems: I could add a thousand more sanity checks to the wizard, but there is a limit.. :) The wizard assumes that the filesystem is decent, which is indeed not the case for NTFS. It is up to you if you want to use filesystems like that, but please don't complain if this leads to trouble.. - Jan 08 2006

Yes, this is planned. There will be a possibility to create a text file that has the same name as the MPEG, but different filename extension. This file can contiain time codes and the wizard will automatically find and use them.

Maybe this feature will be in version 1.1. - Dec 19 2005

Well, all the wizard is doing is give the command "Play this file" to KDE. If that command does not do anything, there isn't much I can do about that..

About your suggestion: The wizard is already pushing the limit. DVDAuthor is not very good at menus with more items on it. There is a work-around, but that will only complicate things. - Dec 17 2005

Yes, I know.. :)

Just for a minute, a forgot that the biggest part of the world is still using the ancient 1.6.x series of the MJPEGTools package. The latest version should fix this problem.

The wizard searches all common font paths I have seen in various distributions.

If you could tell me what distro you use and where your fonts are, I can add them to the wizard.

The wizard supports both truetype and type1/postscript fonts. - Dec 08 2005

I know nothing about DVB files and I don't have access to them.

Using libavcodec would require DVD Rip-O-Matic to use different commands for encoding. I chose to use XviD directly rather than via libavcodec.

Future versions of DVD Rip-O-Matic will probably add support for mplayer versions that only have libavcodec support.

Regarding uninstalling: Any new version will automatically replace the old one, uninstalling is not needed. - Nov 20 2005

As you can read in the README file, the Installer.kmdr file is a Kommander script, not a shell script.

You should run it using the Kommander Executor. You can do that by opening the file in the same way as you would open any other file: Just click on it with your mouse and it will run. - Nov 17 2005

Have a look at the KmPg2 MPEG2 encoder project:

http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=29587

This tool will soon support AVI/WMV/AFM/OGM/... video formats as well.

I prefer not to merge AVI -> MPEG2 conversion into the DVD authoring wizard, because it would never yield high quality DVD disks, unless you add lots of options to it. IMHO it is much better to have two easy-to-use tools that are very good at one specific job. - Nov 17 2005
As soon as the MPEG encoder from the MJPEGTools project supports it, sure... - Nov 16 2005
If you could additionally handle use cases like "make a DVD out of every video format supported by [backend programs] (e.g. avi, wmv, ...)" you would be The King Himself.

Just wait for KmPg2 version 2.0...

The only thing I find kind of sad is that your programs are seperate ones and not integrated into K3b

Well, that would require me to dive into full-blown C++ KDE/QT development. I'll stick to simple scripting for the moment. :)

The K3B developers are currently focussing on the Audio department of K3B, my guess is that the Video department will be next. We'll see what K3B 0.13 will bring... - Nov 15 2005
Well, Kommander is not very well suited for developing full-blown applications with menus, project management and so on.

Besides, I'm a fan of the "One App For One Task" approach. Combining everything into one big monster-app generally won't make things any simpler.

One thing that could be useful though, is some kind of project management that lets you store settings between uses. - Nov 15 2005

Yes, I might add OGM support some day.

Currently, this is more difficult to do, because mplayer/mencoder does not have native support for the OGM container format. Patches are always welcome though! :) Also, virtually any player, even hardware DVD players, can play XviD, while many players do not play OGM. - Nov 15 2005
Hardware Messages MOCKUP

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by RikRat 26 comments

This is very easy to code by yourself.

Personally, I created a simple Bash script that listens for HAL events. For example, when I plug in a USB memory stick, it will automatically show a balloon saying:

"New device detected: Kingston DataTraveler, 512 MB storage space."

Also, it automatically mounts the device and shows the contents in a new Konqueror window.

When I plugin my digital camera, it also displays a message and automatically synchronises the images with my DigiKam photo collection.

If I'm not mistaken, KDE 3.5 has a similar HAL-based feature built in. - Oct 06 2005

The problem is in this line:

INFO: [mp2enc] The MPEG encoded output file name is "/home/pinom/Dokumenty/temporary/DVDAuthorWizard_Temporary_Files_10513/soundtrack."

That output file lacks the ".mp2" filename extension, so it cannot be found by DVDAuthor.

I really don't see how this is possible, because this filename is hardcoded into the script. The only way to make this happen is to change the script itself... - Aug 15 2005

I'm fairly sure that the sh @global(_KDDIR)/DVDBuilder.sh" is correct. I always run the wizard directly, without installing and it works perfectly.

It is hard to imagine how

./DVDBuilder.sh

returns zero and

sh "@global(_KDDIR)/DVDBuilder.sh"

does not return zero. What happens when you replace the line

sh "@global(_KDDIR)/DVDBuilder.sh"

with just

"@global(_KDDIR)/DVDBuilder.sh"

Good to hear!

I'm also planning to release an MPEG2 encoding wizard very soon. It uses MJPEGTools to create image processing chains that optimize the video stream before it reaches the encoder. The resulting MPEG2 files look *very* good. It will include a profiler that you can use to find the optimal processing pipeline for any video source.

So, stay tuned.. :) - Aug 14 2005

Creating a S(VCD) is completely different from creating a DVD. It differs so much that I don't see how I could unify (S)VCD support with my wizard in a way that is not completely insane.. :) I'd better create a special wizard for that, but I don't think I will do this.
