Various KDE 1.-4. Styles by gg3po 42 comments

I'd like to make some variations on this that could be used to make a more minimalist, or 'lite' version, for those that don't want much distraction... I'm thinking smaller title bar, thinner margins for the windec, more squarish buttons, etc... - Jan 08 2004

The source files are there, now. Feel free to run with it. I've made it available in 3 formats. If anyone needs me to convert to additional formats (listed in the changelog), let me know, and I'll do so. - Jan 08 2004

Actually, I'd say this has a number of sources of inspiration. It's based on a Flash/ActionScript GUI app that I made some time ago, which was, in part, inspired by the default Mozilla 'Modern' theme, Macintosh OS X, and a smattering of other ideas -- some of which are entirely my own (the alpha blended darkening of the scrollbars, progressbars, title bar, etc.[at least I'd never seen any other style doing this before, but I could be wrong :-) ]) - Jan 08 2004

Yeah, the shines do add a certain cheese factor... :-) Basically it's meant to look reminiscent of a 1970's Funk-ish, 'bling bling'-kinda-thing. That genre (if you can call it that) was usually kinda cartoonish (a cross between Fat Albert and Parliament Funkadelic, if you will :-) ). - Jan 08 2004

I tend to agree... This one's probably going to require someone that already has a bit of experience in this area, (one of the reasons why I'm not yet prepared to take it on all by my lonesome.) - Jan 08 2004
sco TP

Wallpaper Other by gg3po 12 comments

I've noticed a pattern with this wallpaper... Every time a new story breaks about SCO pulling another lame-brained stunt, the 'good' rating on this wallpaper seems to go up. The more SCO's 'popularity' sinks, the more this wallpaper's rises :-) Just an interesting observation I thought I'd share. - Dec 21 2003

The Way that KDM should look

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by boskicinek 112 comments

I would have to agree. One of the things I love about KDE is how hyper-customizable it is, but when it comes to the kdm screen, I can change little else but the wallpaper and button style. - Nov 24 2003

KDE 3.2b1 with new Freedesktop XServer

KDE Plasma Screenshots by shm 4 comments

I've read a lot about Freedesktop's new XServer, lately (on both OSNews and Slashdot)... Those guys are putting together some pretty exciting stuff. The combination of their project and KDE could make for a Linux desktop experience that rivals that of Mac OS X. I can't wait for it to go mainstream! BTW, great desktop! - Nov 12 2003

I don't think there's a need to start censoring. There is a lot of good art out there that is inspired by religion. I wouldn't mind seeing some art that deals with, for example the plight of the Tibetan Buddhists, or discrimination against Muslims, etc. Why not Christianity, as well? I really doubt that this is as offensive to as many as you seem to imply. - Oct 22 2003
Don't take no Einstein...

Wallpaper Other by timbrown527 26 comments

To me Einstein represents a scientist with a heart -- something noticeably lacking in many. It's a shame that so many people tend to remember him for Atom bombs. In reality, he was a staunch pacifist. - Oct 22 2003

It's good to see people starting to use this Tux. I really like your use of the reflection. Using it as a K-menu icon's a good idea, too. Very cool. - Oct 18 2003

I've noticed that people tend to judge the wallpapers more harshly than the themes, windecs, etc. The highest rated wallpaper is only at 81%, while the others are often well into the 90's. - Oct 16 2003

Good point... I'll get rid of the bluish tint. I was basically trying to match the color of the shadowed white belly, but didn't get it quite right. You can expect the correction probably sometime tonight, or early tomorrow. - Oct 15 2003

I'd like to post them. Forgive my ignorance, but where is the appropriate place for image source files on kde-look? From what I can see, every other wallpaper just has the large image file under the 'download' link, with smaller screenshots when you click on the thumbnails. - Oct 15 2003

Thanks for the compliment. You're right about the head being a bit rounder on this Tux. This is one of several slight aesthetic tweaks I made to his form. I kind of like the rounder head. What does everybody else think? - Oct 14 2003

In most schools they teach you that socialism and capitalism are at two opposite ends of a linear political scale that runs from 'left' to 'right'. Politics could be better represented as a ring that eventually meets again as you go around it. Historically, both capitalism and socialism end in oligarchies that oppress the little people. In capitalism a very few elite heads of corporations accumulate all the wealth for themselves, doing all they can to prevent the masses from climbing the ladder and challenging their control... In socialism, even though the goal claims to be one of equality through 'fair' redistribution of wealth to all, the reality is that *someone* (another group of elite few -- sound familiar?) has to have the final word on what 'fair redistribution' really is. The problem with any political system is the imperfect humans that practice it. Humans tend easily toward corruption. We have all of history before us on this one. - Oct 10 2003

I took a screenshot of a Mac desktop, then cut out the finder bar... I took it into Gimp and added the 1,2,3,4 for desktop switching, and the additional eject button, since I have 2 CD drives. The taskbar is just an external taskbar that I've set to width=1% and positioned at the top, center so that it ovelaps the superkaramba finder bar and seems to become a part of it. - Jun 17 2003

I'd definitely tone down the saturation... The greyer tones are much more artistic and appealing... Your first set of icons really look the best. If anyone wants colorful "tele-tubby" icons, let them use Winblows XP. Keep up the good work. - Jun 13 2003

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by l3m 65 comments

Sorry to post twice, but I figured out why it wasn't working... By default, it installed to my /usr/local/kde directory... but apparently, in order for it to show up in my Control Center, it had to be in ~/.kde so I just made 2 symlinks: one in ~/.kde/ that points to /usr/local/kde/lib , and the other in ~/.kde/share/apps/kwin/ that points to /usr/local/kde/share/apps/kwin/acqual3m.desktop
Now it works beautifully :-) - Jun 07 2003
