Plasma 5 Applets by nowardev 10 comments

I haven't yet made the full switch to KDE5 (got it installed on my barely used laptop), so it's nice to see something like this, which I use on KDE4 available. It looks like it doesn't hide itself (and take up no panel space) when there's no active window though. Any plans for adding that as an option in the future, assuming such a thing is possible within Plasma's constraints? - Apr 12 2015

That's a very nice looking setup. Only thing I'd change is the cube caps to something that matches the wallpaper. By the way, mind posting a link to the wallpaper? - Feb 12 2014

This is one of the better looking QtCurve themes out there. Great work!

By the way, how'd you get the resize handle in the bottom-right corner of the windows? I looked through all of QtCurve's options and couldn't find a setting for that. - Nov 19 2013

Activity Switching Effect

Kwin Effects by ivancukic 3 comments

This looks great, and it fills a major gap in KWin's repertoire. A couple small nitpicks if you don't mind:
1) Is it possible to add any configuration? It'd be nice to be able to set the duration of the effect (and even nicer if we could change the effect from a zoom to a simple crossfade or slide perhaps).
2) When switching activities, the wallpaper of the newly selected activity is briefly visible as the windows on that activity zoom in. That's fine, and I'm guessing it's the desired effect so as to serve as a quick reminder of which activity you're on, but it's not always consistent. A lot of times, the wallpaper of the activity I'm switching from will be shown instead. Is there any way to fix this?
Aside from those minor issues, this is pretty much perfect. Thanks, and keep it up! - Sep 04 2013

Whenever a KDE developer brings up the beautiful interfaces being made possible by all the work going into porting stuff to QML, they need to start including a link to your profile page here. Both of your steampunk-inspired widgets look absolutely stunning, and are prime examples of what's possible. Thanks for sharing this awesome work with us, and keep it up! - Sep 04 2013
Cool Effect

Kwin Effects by keluoinhac 27 comments

In case anyone else is wondering, it's about identical to Compiz's fading zoom effect for opening/closing windows.
It looks really smooth, but the fact that it's used for all window types makes it a little too much for my taste (You might look at the code for Generic Effects to see how he implemented per-window type effects). Also, when Fade is enabled, there's a one-frame flicker in the animation, so even if you were to offer the ability to choose which window types this gets applied to, that would need to be fixed as well. Although, I'm thinking that could be an easy one, as I saw the issue in an older effect and the fix was as simple as changing the stacking order (I think?) in a plaintext file for the effect. - Jul 27 2013

Great idea. Good to see you're still active. I noticed the relative lack of commits to this project - https://bitbucket.org/flupp/smooth-tasks-fork/ - and thought you might have moved away from KDE. By the way, is that project more or less "dead?" I only ask because it was my favorite task manager widget, but this issue - https://bitbucket.org/flupp/smooth-tasks-fork/issue/22/custumizable-alignement-and-order-of-task made it unusable for me. Great job on the new release! All the new features seem to be working great. I just finished packaging and installing the latest version, and I'm exeriencing a (relatively minor) bug - the widget is taking up a very wide area in the panel. Here's a screenshot to show what I mean http://i.imgur.com/s2tKYXi.png. Aside from that, this seems to be the release I've been waiting for (i.e., it's pretty much perfect). Thanks for all your hard work! - Feb 23 2013
Kup Backup System

System Software by sideshow 225 comments

This might be the best back-up system I've seen for Linux. Great work!

I installed Kup from the Ubuntu 12.10 package, and was initially having some problems. Whenever I tried to manually invoke a back-up, Kup would complain about the destination. It turns out the actual cause was bup wasn't installed. So just FYI, you might want to 1) have Kup offer to install bup if it's not found (similar to how K3B offers to install extra codecs), 2) add bup as a dependency to the Ubuntu package.

Thanks for all your hard work on this project. - Feb 20 2013
AppMenu QML

Plasma 4 Extensions by glad 168 comments

I've packaged this widget for Kubuntu in my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~mikevaughn/+archive/omnilinux.

Also, I'm still experiencing the bug that another user reported some time back: This widget is showing empty application categories in the menu. I've opened kmenuedit to confirm that the categories are in fact empty; they actually do contain some sub-categories (which are also empty), but no actual applications. I guess I could just delete those categories in kmenuedit, but this means that if I were to install an application in the future that belongs to one of these categories, it would end up in the "Lost & Found" category instead of where it's supposed to go. I took a screenshot to show that this only occurs with AppMenu-QML: http://i.imgur.com/8Bml6A7.png. - Feb 05 2013

Great job on the update. I think you can now safely claim that this is the most complete (*and* beautiful) icon theme available for the Linux desktop. My only question: Where did the SVGs go? I definitely agree with your decision to remove them from the main package due to size constraints, but it'd be nice if they were still available separately for people who want to tweak and/or help out with new icons. - Jan 25 2013

Looks great, and it's nice to finally have a QtCurve theme/color scheme that looks good with your other SteampunK works. My only complaint is the contrast of the text on the buttons is too low. Otherwise, awesome work! - Dec 15 2012

Icon Sub-Sets by AlessandroBompadre 22 comments

Really great work! This is probably the most complete icon set I've used under KDE, which is even more impressive given it works acrosss multiple desktop environments. It's also one of the best looking. Thanks for all the time and effort you've put into this.

My only real complaint is how much space it takes up - 778 megabytes! o_O Given most of the KDE icon themes I've used (which were reasonably complete) took up no more than ~50-100MB, this is quite a drawback. I had a look in some of the directories, and from what I could tell, you're not using symlinks for identical icons at all. Given how many duplicates there are, doing so should significantly cut down on the space. For example, acroread.png, adobe-reader.png, AdobeReader.png, AdobeReader8.png, AdobeReader9.png, and AdobeReader10.png all use the exact same icon. Instead of making them 6 individual files, you could just have acroread.png, then make the others symlinks to that file (ln -s ./acroread.png adobe-reader.png; ln -s ./acroread.png AdobeReader.png; etc.); doing this would free up a lot of room since only the original file actually uses any disk space.

Lastly, extra kudos for releasing this under the GPL. There are a few tweaks that I'd like to make, but was unable to locate the sources. Could you point me to where I'd find them? Thanks!

(A note about the provided .deb file: I'm assuming it's because it's so big and contains such a huge number of files, but trying to open it with Kubuntu's .deb installer [qapt-deb-installer] brought my entire system to a screeching halt. You should probably advise users to install it via "sudo dpkg -i Potenza.deb" on the command line instead.) - Dec 05 2012

Not really to my taste, but kudos for trying something different. Perhaps it'd look better if the lines in the background contrasted a bit less? As it is now, they kind of clash with the overlaying text, making it hard to read. - Sep 29 2012

Really interesting concept. I'm sure I don't need to point out that it's a bit rough around the edges (especially the Google search interface -- after scrolling through a bunch of results, it wouldn't let me get back to the search bar or the main menu and I had to close the program), but it shows a lot of promise. Looking forward to future releases. I'd like to package it for inclusion in my PPA once it gets a bit of polish; do you think you could fix the Makefile so that it installs the program globally in the next release? - Sep 03 2012
