Hello,
unfortunately, that problem still occurs. I can close KGmailNotifier normally from context menu, but when I close KDE, it crashes as before.

I will gladly help you with testing. Now waiting for that beta :) - Apr 28 2007
In fact, my PyKDE is 3.16.0. And problem started to occur after update to newer version (like 1000 other packages :-P ). So cause lies elsewhere, I think.

Proof:

Version: 3.16.0-0ubuntu11
Replaces: python2.3-kde3, python2.4-kde3
Provides: python2.4-kde3, python2.5-kde3
- Apr 24 2007
Yes, it is 3.5.6, I have forgotten to mention this ;-) - Apr 24 2007
When closing, there is an error (signal 11).

KCrash: Application 'kgmailnotifier.py' crashing...
---------

It occured after upgrade to Kubuntu Feisty for the first time, and it happens whenever notifier is closed (system shutdown, in example :-P ).

To 1: Personally I don't like having numbers on my systray (just a matter of taste, I guess), but I agree that it would be useful. I'll add this as an option.

So I am looking forward next version :)

To 2: This does sound reasonable. On the other hand I've been thinking it would be better to make the popup work in a way that clicking the tray icon would just reset the timer (before closing) instead of reopening it with animation. This would be useful if you didn't have time to read sender and subject since you could make it stay up longer. Anyway, I'll think about it (again as an option).

It would be great to have a choice. Or it may stay as you suggested, but it should be an easier way to close the box. Maybe clicking anywhere on the box (except link, of course)?

To 3: (...) I'd like to keep this app installable anywhere (in a single dir, that is) so you can just extract and run.

I like it that way.

I still have to think about how to implement this. I'll gladly accept your translations once KGmailNotifier is ready to use them:-)

Just let me know :-)

To 4: I never had this problem myself, but I suppose this would happen when the Gmail server is actually reachable but retrieving the atom takes way too long (for what reason ever). If it can not connect at all you would get a "Connection failed!" immediately. Not sure what can be done about this, but I'll think about it.

All I need to reproduce this problem is unplugging my network cable and selecting option "check mail now".

Thanks for your feedback.

You are welcome :-] - Apr 07 2007
I love your notifier and I am already using it :) But I still see some things which could be (IMVHO ;-)) improved.

  • If you could show a number of new messages in a tray icon (like KCheckGmail does) it would be much more convenient than hovering over that icon or clicking it.

  • About clicking - when the box is visible, the second click should close the box instead of showing it again. I know that there is a close button, or I can wait, but that would be even better (no additional mouse movement).

  • And the last thing - have you ever thought about translations? I could help you with polish one, If you wish :-)

  • When I have connection problems (and unfortunately, I have some lately :-/ ), KGmailNotifier tends to hang up - box freezes and kwin has to kill this app.
