As always, I must say how fantastic this theme is. Very fast, and very smooth.

Just a small problem here. If I open an app, where there is no corresponding icon in the default theme, I'm not getting an 'x' icon added to the bar. I just get a blank space. This used to work on earlier versions, but isnot working now.

Any clues on where to look to correct this?

Yes, I probably was a bit short with you, and for that I'm sorry.

The script does have a comment regarding altering the metric value, however, above that in capitals is a big thing saying do not edit anything within the script, do it from within the program. It then says use the configure theme menu.

Sometimes, when you are doing this, and people don't follow instructions, and then wonder why things don't work, it is frustrating. That is not an excuse, just an explanation.

Again, I'm sorry. I vowed when I started this project, I would try to be responsive and helpful to the users. I have failed on this occasion.

This is some really nice stuff you've added. The arrow themes are just fantastic (although the fire theme itself is not my cup of tea). The redround gives good visual clues for what's running etc. The only issue I have with these is that the arrows stay at the bottom and don't rise with the icon. Is that fixable?

This is by far and away the best karamba theme.

In order for anyone to give you any help, you will need to help yourself first. One of the great features of unix/linux, is that programmers try to maximise the amount of information available when a programme goes wrong. However, usually this is only easily available if you run a program from a terminal.

So you need to open up a terminal (use konsole), and run superkaramba using the following command:

superkaramba /path/to/theme/themename.theme

please note that you'll have to replace the /path/to... bit with the actual path to the theme you want to run and the actual theme name. Once you have done that, cut and paste the output and email it to me, and I'll endeavour to help.

This theme uses the urllib module to download the data. This should work transparently with a proxy that doesn't require authentication. However, you need to set the http_proxy environment variable in the shell from which you launch the theme. The obvious place to put it is in .bashrc. Just add the line:

export http_proxy="http://some.proxy.com:3128"

You should then be good to go.

OK. In response to your questions:

1. The radar map function does not work for the BBC site - sorry. If you want that, use weather.com. The button on the right will display webcam pictures. You need to tell the theme where to get them from. You would have learned this if you'd read the readme/faq (at the bottom of the configure menu).

2. See above.

3. Agreed. I'll change it in the next release. - Oct 25 2003

If you downgrade to a pre 1.6 version, you can still use it with 0.33, but the text will be smaller.

Hi, me again.

Got 1.0.11.

Couple of points:

I don't see any improvement in CPU usage on idle (if anything it's slightly higher) - about 8% on a AMD Duron 1.2GHz. 1.0.10 was about 2-5% on the same CPU.

Also, the theme is much wider now (to accomodate the realosx animation), even if you don't use realosx. Not a biggy.

See my previous post for some other things.

Still my favourite theme (except for Liquid Weather ++ = but you always like your own stuff best :)).

Karamba & Superkaramba by stefano 169 comments

Just downloaded 1.0.10.

This is really nice now. CPU usage on idle (on a pIII 600Mhz laptop) is 2-5%.

Animation is really smooth. The bug where the icons didn't quite go to rest properly now works well. However the animation where they drop down to rest is still very slow.

Can you add the option to have icons bounce multiple times when a window opens.

Other than this, this is now very useable.

Great work!

Two comments:

The superkaramba developer is supposed to be fixing the font problem in the next release, allowing font sizes to be specified by pixel rather than point size. I have been waiting for this, rather than implementing an ugly hack.

Regarding background issues, that's a superkaramba issue, which I can't fix. Post to the forums on netdragon.sourceforge.net.

Regarding speed, I am in the process of trying to shift to weather.com's xml service. This requires that I learn how to parse xml in python, as well as working out how to comply with their rather strict rules.

There are a couple of things in there that are of concern. However, it's their content, and they can choose how they distribute it.

Putting on my pragmatic hat, in order for there to be an issue (ie. they take legal action), they would either have to suffer loss, or they could take an account of profit (ie $0). It's hard to see what practical risks there are.

However, it might be even more pragmatic to leave things as they are, or if their site changes too often, move to another site.

Using 1.0.9.

The icons don't always return to their resting point after mouse out. Definitely don't return when there is no window maximised (ie only the desktop showing). And sometimes doesn't happen when there is a window maximised.

This is getting really good. Some feedback:

- The animation when the widget returns to resting after a mouse out is very slow.

- The icons don't return to their original resting position after a mouse out. They are still a bit jumbled.

- If I specify the "kmail" icon, I get the crystal kmail icon, and not the icon from the iconset I'm currently using (umicons). All other icons are umicons.

- CPU usage on idle is between 0 and 3% on an AMD 1.2GHz Duron w/ 256MB Ram.

- CPU usage on mouseover is between 45 and 65%.

- If I click Reload Theme, I get:

Call to widgetUpdated failed
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "osXBar.py", line 68, in initWidget
theEngine.Init(0)
File "osXBarEngine.py", line 174, in Init

File "osXBarSensor.py", line 248, in Init
thread.exit(self.EngineThread)
TypeError: function takes no arguments

And a crash. Not a major, as it only affects reload.

I may now have to ditch 0.90pre4 for this version.

Keep up the good work!

sounds like you've got a font problem. You can manually fix this by going through the liquid_weather.py file searching for "prettyText", and change the size of the text there.

The next release of Superkaramba is supposed to have a fix for this, and as soon as it comes out, I'll be fixing this problem.

when you look at the detail panel, does the time entry change? That is the time of the last forecast update on weather.com.

If it's updating in the console, it should be updating in the theme.

You are experiencing very strange behaviour, that I can't explain. Are you sure that the display does not reflect the data displayed in the console?

It's very difficult to come up with solutions, when it works for me, and 99.9% of all other users. Either there's an issue with your connection, or the forecast your using isn't updating. What's the location you're using?

I used an hour and a half as a reasonable time for updating. If you want to change it, you'll have to change both the INTERVAL variable in the .theme file, and search for the number 3600 in the .py file. That is a number in seconds, reduce it to what you want.

What's wrong with an hour and a half?
