Description:

Arc-BLACK is a flat, dark-mode theme with transparent elements, for GTK, xfwm4, openbox-3, GNOME-Shell, and Cinnamon desktop environments. Black-on-black-on-black, with the signature Arc-Blue, right where you expect it.

Arc-BLACK also has matching Icons and Folders here.

Arc theme is 2019's most popular theme, as it has been for the past couple of years, according to major sources: (August 2, 2019) https://www.ubuntupit.com/top-15-best-gnome-shell-themes-gnome-desktop/. As such, the well-embraced standard Arc theme has always been available in the three variants of Arc, Arc-Dark, and Arc-Darker; but, at last, a measurably even darker black Arc has arrived on the GTK+ scene. Even at it dimmest, the earlier Arc variants have never quite satisfied those who need the lights turned down real low, but this black variant should fix all of that.

The black Arc desktop theme darkens only six elements, on the whole, but where it happens makes all the difference. Significantly, keeping the official Arc hues, contrasts, and structure wholly intact was foremost in this project's objective. Thus, nothing is altered one tiny bit in those crucial areas - as the existent, intact, Arc hues are pragmatically darkened.

Moreover, the signature Arc-Blue hue is not darkened or altered in any way via the new Arc-BLACK variant. The goal was invariably to keep Arc as we know it, while merely darkening the elements necessary to align with the brightness values more associated with what heavy users demand from dark themes. We hope we achieved that for you.

Special thanks to horst3180 at: https://github.com/horst3180/Arc-theme, for initially advancing Arc, and for inspiration. Further thanks to NicoHood at: https://github.com/NicoHood/arc-theme, for keeping Arc alive and great, more currently.

Manual Installation Is Easy:

1) Extract the "tar.xz" file into your "~/.themes/" folder - to install for current user only - or into the "/usr/share/themes/" folder - for the theme to be applied globally. 2) Use the GNOME Tweak Tool or an equivalent app to enable it for your desktop.

If installing manually, make sure to install the dependency: "Murrine theme engine" if you do not already have it; and update your GTK+packages if you have not.

Logging out and then logging back in may be necessary on some operating systems to fully implement themes.

10 Excellent! Looking forward to the color variants. Not sure what colors you will use, but it would be nice to have a selection of colors close to the gnome-colors icon set. This theme matches GNOME-Brave(blue) nicely. Dust(brown), Human(orange), Illustrious(magenta?), Noble(purple), Wine(red), and Wise(green) remain. One very minor inconsistency: the text when clicking on the File, Edit, etc. menu in GTK2 apps e.g. Pale Moon, is still black text on blue BG. Keep up the great work, you're killing it.

The first 7 colors are up (go look). I may do something different with the 'Kiwi... and make it a forest-green (your opinion?). No dust or wine, yet; but I wanted to get started with these (fairly) well-tested variants.

I think Kiwi looks fine as-is, but forest does sound interesting, so whatever you decide is cool by me.

Oops one more thing: On XFCE 4.14 the Workspace Switcher on the panel is very difficult to see as it's virtually the same color as the panel. If I find anything else I'll let you know.

I tore it apart yesterday, when I saw your note; I'm still trying to get that to line up. We'll get it; thanks!

We have a six-to-eight multi-color version of Arc-Black currently under testing. I wish they would hurry up too! ;)

Arc-Black underwent 14 modifications, with 4 files added, to include: 1 change to plank; 2 changes to gtk-2.0; and 11 changes to gnome-shell.

29-11-19: Version 1.5.5 12 days ago

Arc-Black underwent 29 modifications, to include 4 changes to xfwm4; 6 changes to gtk/gnome default docks/panels; 1 change to plank; 1 change to openbox-3; 3 changes to metacity-1; 1 change to gtk-3.0; and 13 changes to cinnamon. The primary outcome of this update efficaciously adds more saturation and depth to the Arc-Blue hue on 'selected' and 'scroll-over' events.

20-11-19: Version 1.5.4 21 days ago

Only one modification via this update; but it is meaningful. All non-gtk-3 platforms will now have pure-white scroll-over/selected text, instead of the traditional dark blue-grey (gtk-3 based platforms had this change last update). This element change was due to user demands.

13-11-19: Version 1.5.3 28 days ago

43 modifications , including 1 to plank, 1 to gtk-3.0, 38 to gtk-2.0, 1 gnome-shell, and 2 to cinnamon. Namely assets, color tweaks for gtk-2 were at the forefront of this update.

04-11-19: Version 1.5.2 1 month ago

41 modifications in total , including, 1 change to plank; 1 change to gtk-3.0; 38 changes to gtk-2.0: 4 changes to menubar-toolbar; 34 changes to assets; 2 changes to cinnamon: 1 light assets, 1 message.svg.
