Description:

Videocatcher is an Internet television application powered by KDE. Videocatcher makes it easy to subscribe to video channels (RSS/atom feeds etc.) and download new videos. It works as a podcast client as well.

It is similar to Miro but is lightweight and powered by KDE.

Videocatcher now has a website: http://videocatcher.zanoi.net

Videocatcher requires KDE 4.4 for notification area (system tray) support. Thus there is no notification area (system tray) support in distributions which have KDE 4.3 or below.

You might want to check out my project, KatchTV, which is also on here. Quite a lot of overlap. KatchTV is probably more feature-complete, but this seems to use more KDE-specific stuff like KIO and be less hackish. Also, KatchTV isn't developed any more, and this clearly is :D Features from both might make a great system though, and you're welcome to borrow as much/little as you need, if code/licenses match :)

KatchTV is incredibly more feature complete! Videocatcher currently doesn't really have any features at all :-) Err yes, there's quite a lot of overlap. Not completely the same though. Unfortunately I'm not really a Python guy, but I'll have a look at the KatchTV code. Are you planning to continue KatchTV development in the future?

Unlikely I'm afraid; I'm not using KDE much these days, and it would need some big changes (but not a rewrite, hopefully) to make it take advantage of KDE4 stuff like phonon and KIO. Also, I've kind of become a convert to the way that Videocatcher and PenguinTV (and many other podcatchers, but not Miro, work). That is, most simply download/convert/manage podcasts, but let a third-party player do the playing in another window. Makes more sense in terms of allowing any kind of content I think, and the unixy do-one-thing-well approach :)

That's a shame. Would be a waste to not have it developed any more :-( That Miro didn't use an external application to play videos was a major annoyance to me, especially when I for a while had no sound with Miro's internal player. The Unixy "do one thing well" is exactly what I'm planning with Videocatcher :-)
