Description:

This is just a concept for a desktop. The screen shot is pretty self explanatory. There would be a section in KControl to modify all the headers and look'n feel, etc, etc. Also, when you click the headings, the icons beneath it would disappear to un-clutter the desktop. What do you think? All feedback/critisim/ideas welcome and could maybe help the KDE Developers.

If you're gonna vote bad, please take the time to say why. Thanks!

I don't think it's a good idea to have icons on the desktop at all. if you want to reach them, you have to minimize your windows. this is where the panel comes in. it's always there. put everything you need on the panel, not on the desktop. make more "k-menu's" if you have to. make a menu for every category you use.. have a search bar in the menu. like the ali-menu (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=25737).

i vote bad. this is the wrong way...

Has someone been previewing SymphonyOS again?

Do a google for Mezzo desktop or SymphonyOS ... it's remarkably similar to what you have here, except for the menu ...

i think this just would be cool to have as a desktop applet, resizable et all. so you can have it as just a way to find stuff, a quick start place...

Personally, I hate when desktop icons take over the entire desktop area.So...

The idea to have everything just a click away is nice, but I haven't found a good solution yet.

This is a really greate idea!

I've been thinking of this a long time now, but since I suck at KDE/Qt-programming I haven't done anything about it...

It would be greate if that entire ... um ... thing... could be pushed away just like a kicker.

Greate job!!

Interesting idea. Personally, I think desktop icons are evil ;-) but for those who chose to use them, I can see where this idea could come in quite handy.

I'd like to see this idea added to the KMenu, since the KMenu versions are less than optimal. :-/

I actually tried Mezzo out the other day, and although it didn't really work all that well in Kubuntu, the idea is good.

I currently only have one icon on my desktop and it's for the Lemmings clone Pingus and I'm not sure why it's still there as I moved it to Kicker also. The only other things that pop up are the autodetected device icons like my memory stick.

I think that it would be cool if it could be something similiar to OSX Dashboard without the widgets, maybe another virtual layer. This could be where Plasma comes in.

I believe the Qt4 has planes, so that all the Gimp windows could be in a single plane etc. The Desktop icons and Plasma widgets could be set to the bottom plane, and move to the top when activated.

As it is I never use desktop icons becuase my desktops are always covered.

The idea is that the areas update themselves (except the Personal section). I just looked at mezzo, and my idea is the same as that. Except, as you said, its not KDE based. I am addicted to KDE.

It might be that I don't understand what you're trying to illustrate, but the image seems to show what many of us already have -- albeit more informally -- on their desktops. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Along somewhat similar lines, but with a more definite concept, there is the Mezzo Desktop ( www.symphonyos.com/mezzo.html ) being developed by SymphonyOS (Linux). It has nothing to do with KDE, but it could theoretically.
