(sorry, doesn't really fit in the given categories) I had the problem that GRUB doesn't work on my laptop but LILO does - I'm using ubuntu and all offered bootsplashes are debian ones. What a huge problem ;-) Well, I just modified one to better fit the OS booted ;-)

To use this, make sure your grub supports splashimages, copy the file to /boot/grub/splashimages/ and open grubconf, choose this file as the splash image. Maybe you'll need to download and install grubconf. based on digitex work http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=23003

Very simple GRUB Splash Image with Ubuntu-logo on it. It scales correctly on widescreen-monitors with aspect ratio 16:10 For easy install use startupmanager ;-)
